The name came from a dog.

In the summer of 1974, a volunteer search and rescue team operating out of the hill country of central Tennessee made their most celebrated find using a three-year-old bluetick hound named Sassy — a dog that had been written off by two previous handlers as too stubborn to train. She found a missing eight-year-old boy in a creek hollow after a 14-hour search, led the team straight to him, and then sat down and refused to move until someone gave her a biscuit.

The team adopted her name officially the following spring. They said it fit. Not because they were flashy or loud — but because they had a way of getting the job done that nobody quite expected, and they weren’t particularly sorry about it.
